Stockpiling & Spreading Guidelines

Stockpiling, Spreading & Grazing Guidelines for YorGrow Biosolids.

Stockpiles:

Stockpiles must be at least 10 metres from a watercourse and 6 metres from a footpath, road and hedge.

Stockpiles must be at least 150m from an occupied dwelling (40 metres if short term storage).

Stockpiles must NOT be within 10 metres of a Powerline.

Stockpiles should not be moved for any reason.

RCS will continuously monitor stockpiles, but if you notice that your stockpile has slumped or moved significantly (especially after inclement weather), please contact your Farm Sales Advisor immediately or telephone the office on 01964 544415. We may then need to implement rectification measures to ensure its compliance.

Spreading:

PLEASE GIVE A COPY OF THESE GUIDELINES TO YOUR SPREADING CONTRACTOR OR OPERATIVE AND ENSURE THEY KEEP IT WITH THEM WHILST CARRYING OUT THE SPREADING WORK. THEY WILL ALSO NEED A SUMMARY OF THE FIELDS TO BE SPREAD, THE INDIVIDUAL TONNAGES AND THE APPROPRIATE APPLICATION RATES.

The biosolids that you are intending to apply should be spread in line with the following guidance and at the application rate specified on your invoice or approved Deployment.

The Code of Good Agricultural Practice (COGAP) for the protection of water, soil and air recommends that you should not apply manures when:

  • the soil is waterlogged

  • the soil is frozen hard or covered in snow

  • the soil is cracked down to field drains or backfill

  • the field has been pipe, mole drained or subsoiled over drains in the last 12 months

  • heavy rain is forecast within the next 48 hours.

  • Winds are prevalent towards housing, which may cause a nuisance to local residents.

You should also not apply manures:

  • within 10 metres of any ditch, pond or surface water

  • within 50 metres of any spring, well, borehole or reservoir that supplies water not for human consumption or for farm dairies

  • BioSolids must not be stockpiled or applied within 250m of a borehole used to supply water for domestic or food production purposes.

  • on very steep slopes where run-off is a high risk throughout the year

  • on any areas where you are not allowed to because of specific management agreements or other schemes e.g. ELS strips next to hedges etc.

  • if it is likely to create public nuisance from odour

Once land has been spread please maintain any harvest intervals or grazing restrictions that are identified in the Safe Sludge Matrix.

Grazing Restrictions:

You must adhere to any grazing restrictions outlined below from the Safe Sludge Matrix. A Season can be interpreted as a 3 month period.

NO other organic manures can be stockpiled or spread with any YorGrow products. Failure to comply could breach your NVZ regulations.

All fields must be incorporated within 24 hours of spreading.

Should you be unsure about any information in these guidelines please phone your Robinson Contract Services contact on their mobile number or our office on: 01964 544415.

Please call 01964 544415 or email spreading@robinsoncontractservices.co.uk informing us 48 hours BEFORE planned spreading commences and inform us of your actual spreading date for our records.  Thank you.
